Bluewater Wind Signs First U.S. Agreement to Provide Offshore Wind Power

New England

Massachusetts

NRG Bluewater Wind has submitted an Expression of Interest in Obtaining a Commercial Lease for the Construction of a Wind Power Project on the Outer Continental Shelf Offshore Massachusetts to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement.

NRG Bluewater intends to develop the Massachusetts Wind Park, an approximately 1,000-megawatt offshore wind energy project whose closest turbine is more than twenty-one nautical miles from any inhabited point of land, specifically off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard/Nantucket, Massachusetts. Our development plan is in part a response to Governor Patrick’s strongly stated ‘Goals for Offshore Renewable Energy’ seeking the development of offshore wind generating facilities. The report affirms, “To continue to expand on the significant economic, environmental and social benefits of offshore wind energy for Massachusetts, the Commonwealth expresses its interest in the development of up to 4 gigawatts of installed generation in federal waters off the coast of Massachusetts provided such resources can be developed in a cost effective manner.’’ This job-creating, stable-priced, renewable energy wind park will provide the equivalent amount of electricity used by over 250,000 Massachusetts households. The NRG Bluewater Massachusetts Wind Park will complement existing industry and renewable energy initiatives in the Commonwealth.
